History
Windows N8 and N9
Description:
Arched shaped double lancet window with 5 cusped rose-shaped traceries.
Restoration 2013:
The lead within all windows has deteriorated due to age. The lead came has
thinned and is breaking away. The lead has deteriorated to a level that it
has reached its life expectancy. Many of the solder joints are broken and
the panels are loose to touch. There is also dirt trapped between the leaded
glass and outer protection. In fact it really is only the outer secondary
glazing that is holding them in place. The metal bars have severely rusted
and are causing further damage to the stone mullions.
The windows require removal for full restoration and also to allow essential
stone repairs. These central mullions have visibly deteriorated and also
there is a horizontal metal bar fitted within the stonework causing further
damage.
The rose shaped tracery within these windows are badly bulged due to the
metal framework. This circular frame has rusted and expanded. This expansion
has placed pressure of the leaded glass, causing it to bulge.
All leaded glass be removed for full conservation (re-lead). We can then re-install with new non-ferrous brass bar. The windows to be removed and returned to the Rainbow Glassour workshop for full conservation. This means the replacement of all lead, soldered and sealed with lead light cement they will then be re-installed with new brass bar and lime mortar.
