Windows E1
Description:
This Tripartite stained glass window is located behind the organ.
There is a mix of geometric leaded glass with stained glass inserts. Painted, silver stained and leaded.
Renovation 2013:
The initial survey showed that the inside right lancet was a priority for
conservation.
It was bulged throughout and a few of the sections of red border glass
had actually fallen within the top panel and daylight could be seen.
The lead was cracked, and there was severe bulging and deformation of lead. This would indicated that it had deteriorated.
There were several breakages within the windows which could only be estimated until full access to the window had been gained, but it was advised that any unpainted broken glass be replaced with new glass of the same quality, texture and colour.
A full survey to assess the window both when scaffolding is in place and when it is removed to confirm the best solution for the problem of lead deterioration. If the lead is still strong, it might be possible to retain the original and flatten the bulges, re-solder and seal. However, if the lead work is of the same condition as the leaded glass within the church, it should be replaced. This is termed “Full conservation”.
With the construction of the scaffolding, Rainbow Glass was able to fully assess the condition of th windows, and it has ben agreed that all three windows will be removed for conservation.
The existing protection system is unventilated which creates the wrong environment for the future preservation of the leaded glass, and a new ventilated protection system will be installed.
