Windows N6 & N7
Description:
History:
The windows in the Memorial Chapel ( North Transept) were erected by the
congregation in memory of ‘Reverend William Corson, Minister of this parish
from May 1848 to December 1887’
The window on the left depicts John the Baptist who is easily identified by
his ‘raiment of camel’s hair’ and long reed cross. Jesus is standing at the
back of a small gathering which John the Baptist addresses with the words:
‘Among you stands one whom you do not know, even he who comes after me, the
thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie’ (St John 1:27)
The second window portrays Jesus seated by the Sea of Tiberias. A small boat
can be seen in the distance. Peter stands before Jesus, his hands clasped as
if imploring Jesus to believe him: ‘Lord, thou knowest all things; thou
knowest that I love thee.’ Jesus gestures towards the sheep as he charges
Peter to ‘Feed my sheep.’ (St John 21: 17)
Renovation 2013:
In sound condition and do not require any conservation procedures, but will have minor repairs and cleaning on-site.
The
windows are currently protected by unsuitable glazed and wire guard
protection.
The existing wire guards are the wrong colour and shape. This makes them
highly visible and the rust has stained the stonework. They have also been
fixed directly into the stonework.
The existing glass protection system is glazed tightly against the stained
glass and is unventilated which creates the wrong environment for the future
preservation of the leaded glass.
The existing wire guard and glazed protection will be removed, while leaving stained glass in place. Re-point externally to seal, and new ventilated protection system installed.
